To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of H G Wells at the end of January, Sky Arts is showing a four part series of his stories starting on 28th January with Ray Winstone in the narrating role of H G Wells himself.
The anthology of twisted tales includes The Late Mr Elvesham, The Purple Pileus, The Moth and Devotee of Art. The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham is a gothic horror in which a bright but poor student, Edward Eden, unwittingly exchanges his youth for riches; The Purple Pileus is a horrific, hallucinogenic cautionary tale about marriage and the dangers of eating mysterious funghi; The Moth follows a professor who, after the death of his fiercest rival, descends into madness and The Devotee Of Art is about an artist's obsession and the lengths he is willing to go to achieve artistic perfection. The series features both well-known stars and up and coming talent of British theatre and screen including Michael Gambon, Antonia Thomas, Luke Treadaway, Shaun Parkes , Rupert Graves, Brid Brennan and Tom Goodman-Hill.
Written and created by Graham Duff, the series is directed by Adrian Shergold and will feature a haunting soundtrack composed by Massive Attack percussionist Damon Reece with vocals from Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser.
