Do you remember when magazines like Look In, Smash Hits, Just Seventeen and, yes, even Jackie had song lyrics in them? I bought all of these back in the day but I'm old (and, in my defence, I hadn't started reading Back Street Heroes at that point.) None of these magazines exist now so there was a lyric-sheet shaped void that needs to be filled. Step forward the lyric video.



We've all experienced the really bad, rip-off attempts of people putting lurid yellow lyrics in unreadable typefaces over ropy bootleg gig recordings, stolen band stills or even *shudder* fan-made pop videos, all of which declare that "no copyright infringement is intended" - to use a Scottish phrase, "Aye, right." Like we would believe the band in question would let something so incompetent knowingly represent their songs. But bands seemed to be missing a trick by not releasing lyric videos themselves because, indeed, there are some great lyrics out there among the "that's just noise" current chart music that I seem to have turned into my own mother in complaining about, and people should still know what songs are about by reading lyrics, done in a polished, entertaining and legal way.



All of which memory-lane meanderings bring me to today's Song of the Day - the new lyric video from the Robster. It is (now, anyway) no secret that I am a huge fan of the Huge Ego and, for the first time in many years, I am genuinely excited for an album coming out, with The Heavy Entertainment Show hitting the streets on 4th November - yes, I've pre-ordered it already and you can too using the link at the bottom. Love My Life is the second single from the album, the first being the sublime Party Like a Russian, a song which borrowed heavily from Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Dance Of The Knights, from his ballet Romeo And Juliet and now well known as the tune from The Apprentice - see what he did there?
