Join members of the 148-year-old Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club in the lead up to the NZ National Show, as they battle history (and each other) in their quest for glory. Audiences will be introduced to an endearing and eclectic group of ‘chook fanciers’, each hoping to take away the top prize, including Doug the determined Club President, Rhys the young upstart, Sarah the chicken whisperer, Ian the exacting judge, Mark the voice of reason and Brian the lovable champion. Pecking Order is a hilarious, unique, and heart-warming slice of Kiwiana which is sure to delight and surprise audiences of all ages.
Award-winning documentary maker Slavko Martinov follows a group of breeders on the run up to the all important national show, and witnesses feathers getting ruffled at a club meeting where things aren’t what they rooster be, as squabbles break out over leadership, breeders bicker about which chicken has the ‘Eggs Factor’, and generational conflicts emerge as young breeders threaten to topple the old guard. There’s an unforgettable bagpipe/chicken procession, and a finale that is both nerve-wracking and unexpectedly moving.
Following in the tradition of quirky New Zealand comedies Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows, and acclaimed documentaries like King of Kong and Spellbound, this hilarious, unique, heart-warming slice of Kiwi life was nominated for best documentary feature at the 2017 Edinburgh Film Festival and had its world premiere at the prestigious Hot Docs festival in Toronto earlier this year. PECKING ORDER is a flockbuster worth crowing about, that proves the old adage - one day you’re cock of the walk, the next you’re a feather duster.
