Film - The 90th Academy Awards Nominations
The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced yesterday...
There's no mistaking the front runner in the Oscars this year as The Shape of Water, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is streets ahead of any other film with 13 nominations in this years awards, the tenth film in Oscar history to earn thirteen nominations. However there's a bit of a scrum in the rest of it as Dunkirk gets 8 nominations and Three Billboards gets seven with Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread on 6 apiece.
The sci-fi blockbusters of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049 also got multiple nods picking up 4 and 5 nominations respectively but these were, as usual, in the technical categories, as was the single nomination for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 although Logan got a nomination in the Adapted Screenplay category.
Something else we noticed about the list this year is the start of inclusions of nominations for "non-traditional" studios like Netflix (Mudbound, Icarus, On Body & Soul, Strong Island, Heroin(e)) and Amazon (The Big Sick), adding weight to the argument that streaming is the way forward now for a lot of film-makers.
The full list of nominations in all 24 categories is below and our own movie mogul Steve Taylor-Bryant has marked his picks for some of the "big" ones. How wrong he actually is, we'll have to wait until 4th March to find out.
