Opinion - Brit Awards Predictions
Susan Omand gazes into her crystal ball shaped radiogram and says who will (or at least should) win this year's Brit Awards...
So the Brit Award nominations were announced on Saturday, apparently. I don't know, I was working then watched Match of the Day, as all good music enthusiasts should. Anyway, I caught up with the list on Sunday morning and, horror of horrors, I recognised a few names. I put this down to the fact that I fast forwarded through the Christmas Top of the Pops, and its New Year clone that was all the same songs by all the same people dressed in all the same (snarked about) outfits, and my short term memory isn't that bad yet.... where was I going with this?
So, yeah, Brit Awards. Dua Lipa (Christmas TotP outfit - weird chiffon tartan pyjama things) got the most nominations with five, beating Ed Sheeran's four (Christmas TotP outfit - he and the backing band actually had quite cool geeky Christmas jumpers with Star Wars and Marvel characters so snark was minimal.) Rag n Bone Man (just a video clip on TotP but whose album I actually listened to last year, so there, nyah) gets three nominations, as does J Hus (nope, no idea - not a TotP usual suspect). There's also three for Liam, however that was one for Gallagher and two for Payne. Talking of pain, the other two soloists from One D (are we still calling them that? Even "on hiatus"?) also got a look in with Harry and Zayn going head to head in the Video of the Year. Because of politics and weirdness (it's like Eurovision, honestly) Bjork and Beck get their usual nominations - it's like there's nobody else in the International categories that anyone can agree on!
Two awards that the powers that be have agreed on already though are the Critics Choice award, which has been given to Jorja Smith (may recognise something if I heard it) and the Producer's Award goes to Steve Mac (who I thought was a 6 Music radio presenter until I remembered that was Steve Lamacq).
The other winners will be announced in a big lavish ceremony (will it be live on TV? Will it hell) on 21st February when you can see how many of my predictions below will actually pan out. I've chosen who SHOULD win each award and who WILL win because they are undoubtedly very different.
