Today at the Proms - Prom 1

The Proms 2018 Season gets underway tonight and to kick off our daily coverage of what's on, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 1: First Night of the Proms...

And we're off! After last night's spectacular Five Telegrams: Sender as a Curtain Raiser, we get to hear the whole of Anna Meredith's Five Telegrams in the world premiere which should be exciting. Other than that we have some Vaughan Williams, which is a piece I'm not familiar with so that should be good and The Planets is always worth listening to, with Holst's musical representation of the seven planets that could be seen from Earth at the time. Given the fact that it's Friday the 13th and there's a certain visitor currently gracing these shores, have a listen to Mars, Bringer of War from the 2015 Proms...
