Today at the Proms - Prom 16

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 16: Stravinsky, Debussy and Wagner  ...

STRAVINSKY!!!!! What? Is that not enough? Yeah, my love of Stravinsky's music is well known and I'm really excited to get another chance to hear The Firebird Suite alongside a piece that's not played quite so often, Song of the Nightingale, which is a symphonic poem adapted from Stravinsky's full opera The Nightingale, often called by its French name Le Rossignol (even though the text Stravinsky used is in Russian) and based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen which was written in Danish. How cosmopolitan!

Talking of which, France and Germany make up the rest of the programme with another Wagnerian overture to start and a beautiful piece from Debussy based on a poem by Rossetti.

But... STRAVINSKY. So here is the man himself, ably introduced by none other than Leonard Bernstein (of whom more later in the Proms), conducting the final 3 scenes of the Firebird Suite.

Here's the full programme for this evening's Prom which you can listen to live from 19:30 on Radio 3 or on the iPlayer
