Today at the Proms - Prom 4
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 4: Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony ...
Just the two pieces today, starting off with a clarinet concerto featuring the soloist Mark Simpson. Magnus Lindberg is a composer that I don't know, although Google is my friend in this regard and I am reliably informed that he is Finnish and studied in the Sibelius Academy which is good enough for me to give it a go.
The main feature tonight though is Shostakovich and a Symphony which commemorates Soviet victims of World War II. Although tonight's work will be fully orchestrated as you'd expect, I was fascinated to find a little snippet of video of the Russian composer himself playing a bit of the symphony on the piano in 1941. I am always stunned when I find actual footage of such famous creators at work!
Here's the full programme for this evening's Prom which you can listen to live from 19:30 on Radio 3 or on the iPlayer
