Today at the Proms - Prom 37
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 37: Orchestra of Santa Cecilia & Antonio Pappano ...
Reminder - Watch Prom 33: Brahms's A German Requiem and Prom 35: New York: Sound of a City on BBC Four tonight
An evening of firsts with Mahler's 1st Symphony, which evolved out of music used in previous work and extended through its lifetime from a tone poem to the more conventional four movement work we know today. Before that we get Bernstein's 1st Symphony and the work that introduced the young conductor onto the stage as a composer.
Before all that though, there's a bit of chaos as the overture of Joseph Haydn's Creation oratorio opens tonight's proceedings. An oratorio, by the way, is like an opera without the theatrical bits. It still tells a story, quite often biblical rather than mythical like opera, using orchestra and choir but without the staging, costumes and acting.
Bring on the Chaos!
