Today at the Proms - Prom 52
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 52: Edward Gardner and the Bergen Philharmonic ...
There's a Nordic theme to tonight's programme with a world premiere from Norwegian avant garde composer Rolf Wallin, whose work, like that of Per Nørgård yesterday, uses mathematical algorithms to inform its atonality, so it should be... interesting at least.
Back to some semblance of Norse-mality (ok, that worked better in my head) after the interval with Sibelius and the sublime Symphony no 2, his "confession of the soul", which he started shortly after the premiere of Finlandia.
However, as if last night's Wagner wasn't enough, we open with the overture to his opera The Flying Dutchman, inspired by the folk tale of the ghost ship and a decidedly choppy trip through the Norwegian fjords (which were designed, as we all know, by the award-winning Slartibartfast).
Here's the full programme for this evening's Prom which you can listen to live on Radio 3 or on the iPlayer
