Today at the Proms - Prom 54
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 54: Iván Fischer & Budapest Festival Orchestra ...
(note: no I can't find Prom 53 either)
More marvellous Mahler today and the last of what are known as his Wunderhorn symphonies, taking their themes from stand alone songs that Mahler wrote to the texts of a book of folk verses Des Knaben Wunderhorn. But it's the very first piece of music this evening that has me intrigued because I know nothing about it or its composer. Doing a quick check, it seems he was a 20th century Romanian composer who taught Yehudi Menuhin to play the violin. So I guess he must be good.
Sandwiched between the two, there is more folk-inspired work, this time from Béla Bartók and the sound of the beautiful Celesta. You may recognise some of it because the Adagio was used in both Alien and The Shining. Have a listen to this performance from New Orchestra of Washington:
