Today at the Proms - Prom 72 & 73
Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 72: Britten's War Requiem and Prom 73: Before the Ending of the Day ...
Another two pronged Prom day. Firstly we get Britten's beautiful War Requiem, a piece commissioned for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral after the original 14th century structure was bombed in World War II. He chose to set the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead interwoven with nine poems about war by the English poet Wilfred Owen and the orchestration of it, with the spreading of the piece between 3 groups of voices/instruments is stunning.
And again the late evening prom is actually an interesting one for me. I'm not a religious person at all but I am an absolute sucker for choral religious music and tonight we will be treated to a sung meditation spanning over 1,000 years of sacred music, including works by Arvo Part, Padilla and Gallus, and Allegri’s exquisite Miserere. Heavenly indeed.
