Today at the Proms - Prom 75

Concluding our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2018, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 75: Last Night of the Proms  ...

Reminder - Watch Prom 75: Last Night of the Proms First half live on BBC Two, second half live on BBC One tonight

Well, that went quickly didn't it? And here we are pomping up our circumstances and fantasising about sea songs in England's green and pleasant land again at the traditional Last Night celebrations. But as always there are a few different bits thrown in every year for good measure. This time I'm looking forward to hearing the Soliliquy from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel and an interesting new piece from the composer Roxanna Panunik, which takes as its inspiration the war poetry of Jewish poet Isaac Rosenberg. We also get Blest Pair of Sirens by Hubert Parry, based entirely of the ode At a Solemn Musick by John Milton and the wonderfully titled Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud (no mention of whether he can do the fandango though).

But, to be honest, the Last Night is all about the traditional stuff so I will be bobbing up and down while trying not to sing the words of the Anchor Butter advert to the tune of the sea songs, passing the handkerchiefs for There's No Place Like Home and yelling at the TV when everyone holds hands at the wrong time in Auld Lang Syne (it's in the second verse and you should know that by now because it even says it in the words... mutter mutter) Whether Britannia will still rule any waves this time next year is anybody's guess but it certainly did at last year's Last Night. See you next year!
