Film - Oscar Nominations & Predictions
Guess what the favourite film was at yesterday's Oscar nominations... Susan Omand picks her favourites...
Yes the favourite was The Favourite, BUT it tied for 10 nominations with Roma, which also, apparently, means Roma ties with Crouching Spider Hidden Wardrobe for the most Oscar nominations for a foreign language film. Talking of firsts, it's also heartening to see a comic-book movie on the Best Picture list as one of Black Panther's seven nominations. A Star is Born also did well in the haul of nomination nods, gathering 8 and is, incidentally, the fourth version of the film to have been nominated. (Why yes, I found an Oscars trivia/stats sheet in the press-pack, why do you ask?)
Aaaanyway. There are no surprises that none of the other sci-fi/superhero films released last year, apart from Black Panther, which was always going to get a mention in "the big leagues", made it to anything other than the technical categories. Oh, apart from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse which is up for Best Animated film. Which is cool. Big surprises too in all the great films from last year that didn't get a mention - like Stan and Ollie, Beautiful Boy and Deadpool 2 (OK, maybe not Deadpool 2, although it was still a brilliant film).
I'll get to my "want to win"/"will win" picks in a minute but can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Melissa McCarthy has done the double - getting nominated for BOTH an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year. Impressive stuff.
However, on to the full list of nominations below and my Mystic Mug predictions. You'll be able to point and laugh at me on 24th February when I've got them all wrong. Again.
