Film/TV - The Golden Globe Awards

This year's winners of The Golden Globe have been announced. Here's the full list of winners and a chance to point and laugh at how many predictions Susan Omand got wrong. Again...

Surprisingly, the Favourite WASN'T the favourite at last night's Golden Globes. Yes, Olivia Colman got the award for best Actress in a Musical/Comedy as she should have done but the film missed out on the other three awards it was up for. In fact, the big winner of the night was a film called The Green Book (not out in the UK until the end of this month) which scooped 3 of its five nominations. Bohemian Rhapsody also did very well, scooping the Best Motion Picture - Drama award and a Best Actor in a Drama award for Rami Malek. Roma also picked up a double, getting both Best Foreign Language film and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. As far as surprises went, it was wonderful to see Christian Bale getting a nod for his stunning portrayal of Dick Cheney in Vice, stunning that Glenn Close beat such strong competition for the Best Actress in a Drama award and that Into the Spiderverse got the nod for the animated category. And surprised that A Star is Born didn't sweep the boards since it got so much critical acclaim but only picked up one award from its five nominations.

As far as the TV awards went, again, American Crime Story picked up two awards but didn't get all 4 that it was up for. The Americans won for best TV Drama but Bodyguard's Richard Madden and Killing Eve's Sandra Oh (who was also a host) picked up the Best Actor and Actress categories. In the TV comedies, The Kominsky Method picked up two awards, including one for Michael Douglas with Best TV Comedy Actress going to Rachel Brosnahan for Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Finally a quick yay for Ben Whishaw who surprisingly bucked a trend and caught the Best TV Supporting Actor award for A Very English Scandal.

Anyway...

Here's the full list of nominations (with Susan's added nominations mutterings in italics) with the real winner of each highlighted and a running total of Susan's correct wish list (ones she wanted to win)/predictions (ones she said will win) score as we go.

1. BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 1/predictions 0)

a. BLACK PANTHER
b. BLACKKKLANSMAN
c. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - WINNER
d. IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
e. A STAR IS BORN

A diverse list in every sense of the word. I would love it to go to Bohemian Rhapsody but it won't. My guess is probably for A Star is Born.

2. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 1/predictions 0)

a. GLENN CLOSE - THE WIFE - WINNER

b. LADY GAGA - A STAR IS BORN
c. NICOLE KIDMAN - DESTROYER
d. MELISSA MCCARTHY - CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?
e. ROSAMUND PIKE - A PRIVATE WAR

What is Melissa McCarthy doing on this list? I've never see her play anything other than herself in a film. This one's a no brainer for me with Lady GaGa streets ahead of anyone else.

3. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 2/predictions 0)

a. BRADLEY COOPER - A STAR IS BORN
b. WILLEM DAFOE - AT ETERNITY'S GATE
c. LUCAS HEDGES - BOY ERASED
d. RAMI MALEK - BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
e. JOHN DAVID WASHINGTON - BLACKKKLANSMAN

*chants* Rami, Rami, Rami. If there was any justice in the world that would be it, but there's not. I have a feeling that Bradley Cooper won't get it either, so my guess is Lucas Hedges.

4. BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 2/predictions 0)

a. CRAZY RICH ASIANS
b. THE FAVOURITE
c. GREEN BOOK - WINNER
d. MARY POPPINS RETURNS
e. VICE

This will either be The Favourite or Vice, although I wouldn't count Vice as either a musical or a comedy so I'm not altogether sure what it's doing in this category.

5. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 2/predictions 1)

a. EMILY BLUNT - MARY POPPINS RETURNS
b. OLIVIA COLMAN - THE FAVOURITE - WINNER
c. ELSIE FISHER - EIGHTH GRADE
d. CHARLIZE THERON - TULLY
e. CONSTANCE WU CRAZY RICH ASIANS

The favourite has to be The Favourite. Olivia Colman owned this role.

6. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 3/predictions 1)

a. CHRISTIAN BALE - VICE - WINNER
b. LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA - MARY POPPINS RETURNS
c. VIGGO MORTENSEN - GREEN BOOK
d. ROBERT REDFORD - THE OLD MAN & THE GUN
e. JOHN C. REILLY - STAN & OLLIE

Oooh tough call. Miranda kind of out-Van-Dyke'd himself in Mary Poppins and I think, although brilliant, Robert Redford is only on this list because it's his last film role. I really want it to be Christian Bale but it's going to be John C Reilly.

7. BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 1)

a. INCREDIBLES 2
b. ISLE OF DOGS
c. MIRAI
d. RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET
e. SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE - WINNER

I'm torn. The anime fiend in me wants Mirai, the comic-book kid wants Spider-man but it's going to be Ralph Breaks the Internet just because it is.

8. BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. CAPERNAUM (LEBANON)
b. GIRL (BELGIUM)
c. NEVER LOOK AWAY (GERMANY)
d. ROMA (MEXICO) - WINNER
e. SHOPLIFTERS (JAPAN)

Roma is getting all the coverage so I don't see anything else really getting a look in, although I'd love it to go to Shoplifters.

9. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. AMY ADAMS - VICE
b. CLAIRE FOY - FIRST MAN
c. REGINA KING - IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK - WINNER
d. EMMA STONE - THE FAVOURITE
e. RACHEL WEISZ - THE FAVOURITE

It will be one of The Favourites but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Amy Adams deserves it for Vice.

10. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. MAHERSHALA ALI - GREEN BOOK - WINNER
b. TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET - BEAUTIFUL BOY
c. ADAM DRIVER - BLACKKKLANSMAN
d. RICHARD E. GRANT - CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?
e. SAM ROCKWELL - VICE

Timothee Chalamet is very much the "up and coming" here so I wouldn't be surprised if he takes this one, however my vote here would go to Adam Driver.

11. BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. BRADLEY COOPER - A STAR IS BORN
b. ALFONSO CUARÓN - ROMA
c. PETER FARRELLY - GREEN BOOK
d. SPIKE LEE - BLACKKKLANSMAN
e. ADAM MCKAY - VICE

Since he will have missed out on the Best Actor award, this one is going to go to Bradley Cooper without a doubt.

12. BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. ALFONSO CUARÓN - ROMA
b. DEBORAH DAVIS, TONY MCNAMARA - THE FAVOURITE
c. BARRY JENKINS - IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
d. ADAM MCKAY - VICE
e. NICK VALLELONGA, BRIAN CURRIE, PETER FARRELLY - GREEN BOOK  - WINNER

I hate to say it but this is going to be another one for The Favourite but it's another very strong category so I won't really be upset no matter who gets it.

13. BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 2)

a. MARCO BELTRAMI - A QUIET PLACE
b. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT - ISLE OF DOGS
c. LUDWIG GÖRANSSON - BLACK PANTHER
d. JUSTIN HURWITZ - FIRST MAN - WINNER
e. MARC SHAIMAN - MARY POPPINS RETURNS

I would love for Desplat to get this for Isle of Dogs but it's going to go to Black Panther. And, let's face it, the score for Mary Poppins Returns is really just a remix of the original isn't it? ;-)

14. BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 3)

a. “ALL THE STARS” — BLACK PANTHER - Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Tiffith, Mark Spears, Solana Rowe, Al Shuckburgh
b. “GIRL IN THE MOVIES” — DUMPLIN’ - Dolly Parton, Linda Perry
c. “REQUIEM FOR A PRIVATE WAR” — A PRIVATE WAR - Annie Lennox
d. “REVELATION” — BOY ERASED - Troye Sivan, Jónsi, Jon Thor Birgisson, Troye Sivan, Brett McLaughlin
e. “SHALLOW” — A STAR IS BORN - Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt - WINNER

I really pity the other films in this category because, much as I'd love it to be Annie Lennox (us Aberdonians have to stick together after all) and all the others likely deserve it too, it's going to be Ms Gaga again because that's the song everyone knows just now.

Enough about the big screen, on to the TV Categories now...

15. BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 3)

a. THE AMERICANS - WINNER
b. BODYGUARD
c. HOMECOMING
d. KILLING EVE
e. POSE

I'm actually surprised by this list because I didn't expect Bodyguard to be on it or Killing Eve. Now that they are though, I'd say Killing Eve will take it.

16. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 4)

a. CAITRIONA BALFE - OUTLANDER
b. ELISABETH MOSS - THE HANDMAID'S TALE
c. SANDRA OH - KILLING EVE - WINNER
d. JULIA ROBERTS - HOMECOMING
e. KERI RUSSELL - THE AMERICANS

Elisabeth Moss deserves this one but I can see Sandra Oh getting it, which will make it fun for her to present if nothing else.

17. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 4)

a. JASON BATEMAN - OZARK
b. STEPHAN JAMES - HOMECOMING
c. RICHARD MADDEN - BODYGUARD - WINNER
d. BILLY PORTER - POSE
e. MATTHEW RHYS - THE AMERICANS

Please please please give Jason Bateman the award. But they won't. It'll go to the next James Bond (calling it now) Richard Madden.

18. BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 4)

a. BARRY
b. THE GOOD PLACE
c. KIDDING
d. THE KOMINSKY METHOD - WINNER
e. THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL

Because I'm becoming ever more impressed by Jim Carrey as a dramatic actor as he gets older, I'd like it to go to Kidding but I wouldn't be too sorry if it went to The Good Place.

19. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 4)

a. KRISTEN BELL - THE GOOD PLACE
b. CANDICE BERGEN - MURPHY BROWN
c. ALISON BRIE - GLOW
d. RACHEL BROSNAHAN - THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL - WINNER
e. DEBRA MESSING - WILL & GRACE

What year is this? Murphy Brown and Will & Grace? Anyway, this is going to be another left-field pick for me as I think Alison Brie is going to take it.

20. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 4)

a. SACHA BARON COHEN - WHO IS AMERICA
b. JIM CARREY - KIDDING
c. MICHAEL DOUGLAS - THE KOMINSKY METHOD
d. DONALD GLOVER - ATLANTA
e. BILL HADER - BARRY

Again I want this to be Jim Carrey but it's going to be Donald Glover who can, basically, do no wrong just now. Anybody but Sacha Baron Cohen really is fine.

21. BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 5)

a. THE ALIENIST
b. THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE: AMERICAN CRIME STORY - WINNER
c. ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA
d. SHARP OBJECTS
e. A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL

The Alienist is the one that interested me the most out of this list, although I could see merit in Sharp Objects picking up the award, however it will go to the American Crime Story because it always does.

22. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 5)

a. AMY ADAMS - SHARP OBJECTS
b. PATRICIA ARQUETTE - ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA
c. CONNIE BRITTON - DIRTY JOHN
d. LAURA DERN - THE TALE
e. REGINA KING - SEVEN SECONDS

If Amy Adams doesn't get the Best Actress in Film award, she needs to get this one. If she does, then give this one to Regina King.

23. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 5)

a. ANTONIO BANDERAS - GENIUS: PICASSO
b. DANIEL BRÜHL - THE ALIENIST
c. DARREN CRISS - THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE: AMERICAN CRIME STORY - WINNER
d. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH - PATRICK MELROSE
e. HUGH GRANT - A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL

*sigh* Another category where American Crime Story will win but all the others deserve it more. As an aside (and because you stopped reading about 8 categories ago) there's very much a "type" of actor here, don't you think?

24. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION (Susan's wishlist 4/predictions 5)

a. ALEX BORSTEIN - THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL
b. PATRICIA CLARKSON - SHARP OBJECTS
c. PENÉLOPE CRUZ - THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE: AMERICAN CRIME STORY
d. THANDIE NEWTON - WESTWORLD
e. YVONNE STRAHOVSKI - THE HANDMAID'S TALE

Thandie Newton absolutely should get this award, she was brilliant in the role. However Penelope Cruz will do, because ACS.

25. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION (Susan's wishlist 4/actual predictions 6)

a. ALAN ARKIN - THE KOMINSKY METHOD
b. KIERAN CULKIN - SUCCESSION
c. EDGAR RAMÍREZ - THE ASSASSINATION OF GIANNI VERSACE: AMERICAN CRIME STORY
d. BEN WHISHAW - A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL
e. HENRY WINKLER - BARRY

Last one. And I really think this one is going to buck the ACS trend because Ben Whishaw is going to take it. Although it would be great fun to see it go to Henry "the Fonz" Winkler instead.

YAY! Ten right! .OK, six really because I had two guesses (want to win/will win) at each so I can only really count the "will wins" as proper predictions. YAY six right, and a note to self to go with a gut feeling more often.
