Today at the Proms - Prom 32 & 33

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2019, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 32: An Alpine Symphony and Prom 33: Mahler, Schubert & Glanert ...

A couple of unknowns on today's schedule; in the morning Prom we have a European premiere from annoyingly talented young (as in aged just 19 type young) Benjamin Beckman. I went looking for some of his other work to see what kind of music he's producing and it is lovely! The orchestration is superb and it's very artistic. So that's something to look forward to. Also in the morning Prom we have Summer Nights by Berlioz [no, not the song from Grease - Ed] and an Alpine Symphony from Strauss which is superbly dramatic.



The evening Prom has a distinct Austrian/German feel to it, with the main feature after the interval being marvellous Mahler. His 4th Symphony is, in contrast to a lot of his other work, bright and happy sounding, complete with sleighbells!



You can definitely hear Mahler's influence over Schubert's Einsamkeit for soprano and orchestra (the morose melancholy and frantic anxiety is strong with this one, heck, it's even called Loneliness!) in an orchestral arrangement by Detlev Glanert.



And it's a new work, this time a European premiere, by Detlev Glanert that opens tonight's Prom, Weites Land.  I found a recording online and it sounds really cinematic, you can easily imagine it as the soundtrack to a Hitchcock movie.
