Today at the Proms - Prom 56

Continuing our daily coverage of what's on at The Proms 2019, Susan Omand has a quick look at the programme for Prom 56: Henry Wood Tribute ...



Lots of nice little bits of music tonight for a 150th anniversary Tribute to Henry Wood, founder of the Prom Concerts. And a huge variety too as we have everything from Debussy to Wagner.  There are a couple of Spanish inspired bits, a Rapsodie from Ravel (he of the Bolero) and one from Enrique Granados, with 12 dances. There's more dancing again from Ravel with his Valse (waltz) after dancing on the Strand with Handel thanks to Percy Grainger. From dancing to singing for Wagner as he sets five poems, written by the wife of one of his patrons, to music and there is female inspiration too behind John Ireland's Piano Concerto, written for composer and pianist Helen Perkin.



There's a completely new work too as Dobrinka Tabakova's work Timber & Steel receives its world premiere. But it's an old favourite that I want to share with you here and the underwater exploration of a sunken cathedral depicted in the Debussy prelude La cathédrale engloutie
