Documentary - On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky

The truth is out there as Steve Taylor-Bryant watched On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky, a Small Town Monsters documentary which comes to VoD from August 3rd...

Cryptid documentarian Seth Breedlove and paranormal researcher Shannon LeGro continue their search for the truth behind the enigma of unidentified flying objects in the latest Small Town Monsters release: On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky. Dark Sky explores the UFO topic from the point of view of LeGro; a podcast host and author and focuses more heavily on eyewitness accounts than typical alien fare.

On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky, is a follow-up to 2020’s On the Trail of UFOs: Season 1", an episodic series created by Breedlove and LeGro and distributed by 1091. "On the Trail of UFOs" explored the long history of the topic and became one of the most-viewed independent UFO documentary series in history, racking up nearly 10 million views on Amazon, alone. Dark Sky goes beyond the history of the subject, exploring modern-day accounts, with additional filming taking place as recently as early May.

I have become quite the fan of the guys at Small Town Monsters and very recently reviewed their output on the search for Bigfoot, finding that their very fair and balanced coverage of often divisive subject matter added to the stories and allowed for the viewer a more immersive experience, a chance to catch our breath and think about our own answers to questions posed. I guess what I am trying to say is that when I am watching something from Small Town Monsters, I know I am going to be comfortable, I will never find bullying or mocking of people, and whilst I will probably finish a screening with more questions than answers, I will have been given enough information from multiple sources that I can maybe make up my own mind or develop my own theories into things. That’s all well and good when you are talking about Bigfoot, but UFOs and alien phenomena is a bigger fish to fry with a very long and horrible history of mockery and finger pointing. There is the odd programme that gets through with more fair coverage, but they are few and far between and, if I want to watch a show on possibly the most divisive of all supernatural subjects, I want to go in with my eyes open, brain engaged so I can think clearly so the safety and comfort I feel with Small Town Monsters really helps.

And here in On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky there is another very balanced and well put together film that uses multiple witnesses and specialists as well as combining these stories with geographical data, science, and common sense to try and come up with some answers for those people that wonder what it is they have seen. Do Shannon LeGro and Seth Breedlove cover old ground in the film? Of course, they do, you can't have a UFO or flying saucer discussion without some well-trodden tropes being mentioned, but what they do accomplish is a calm and rational investigation that gives a couple of reasons come the end as to why there are so many sightings in West Virginia itself; whilst military experiments and government cover ups is one of those aforementioned tropes, the tie in between the sightings and coal mining is a new one on me and one that fascinated.

I don’t want to talk much more about the content of On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky; as with all the Small Town Monsters output I think it’s imperative the viewer makes their own mind up about the subject matter presented and the witnesses within. I will state however that this is another great film, full of interesting accounts and beautiful landscapes, presented in a way that really appeals to me as a viewer and as a human being and Shannon is a great guide and narrator on the journey you are about to undertake. On the Trail of UFOs: Dark Sky will be available to stream shortly from the usual places and is another very watchable chapter from one of my new favourites in the world of documentary filmmakers.
