News - The Rise And Fall Of T In The Park
BBC Radio 1 charts the rise and fall of seminal Scottish music festival T In The Park in a brand new BBC Sounds podcast...
Press Release
Radio 1 DJ Arielle Free takes listeners from the beginnings of the iconic festival through its rapid growth and to its ultimate ending in new Radio 1 Podcast, The Rise And Fall Of T In The Park, which launched on BBC Sounds on 4th July.
The festival, which was a rite of passage for every Scottish teen, began in 1994 and ran for 22 years until July 2016, when the music played out at Strathallan Castle for the final time.
The Rise And Fall Of T In The Park transports listeners back to the early days of the festival’s fun and nostalgia as Arielle hears from the people that were there living it - the artists, the vendors and the punters who made the annual pilgrimage to watch some of the biggest acts in the world.
The series will then delve into the decline of the festival, as Arielle asks the organisers and the team behind it to bust the myth on its ending and discover what happened to a festival that was believed would live on forever.
Arielle Free said, “Like so many Scottish teens, I remember experiencing T In The Park and having an unforgettable weekend. I can’t wait to take Radio 1 listeners back to the heyday of the festival and relive its illustrious 22 years as I reveal behind-the-scenes secrets and uncover the real reason why T In The Park is no longer around.”

Here's what's coming up in the first four episodes:
Episode one
Join Arielle Free as she reveals how Glasgow’s stint as European City Of Culture in 1990 helped lay the groundwork for T In The Park. Featuring interviews with those on the scene and co-creators of T In The Park, this is a story of relaxed licensing laws, guitar bands, the underground rave scene, big ambitions and rampant optimism in the face of Scottish weather.
Episode two
In this episode we tell the story of how the very first T In The Park came close to also being the last. Told by fans and festival organisers, this is a story of musical megastars, quirky camping and near-failure. Hear how the organisers found a site for the festival, booked bands and had moral support from Michael Eavis - all to then lose cash, but win the hearts and minds of fans and critics alike.
Episode three
After three years, T in the Park gets bigger as it makes the move to its spiritual home of Balado in Perth & Kinross. With the previous site far too small, a shift across Scotland to the East Coast brings with it space for many more thousands of people. With more campers comes more chaos, more sliding around in the mud and way more pairs of feet than soggy fields can cope with. But once again, Michael Eavis is there with advice - farmer to farmer this time - to keep the T in the Park on track.
Episode four
Arielle takes us on a dive off the main stage with the help of some international headliners, T In The Park fan stories, and one or two backstage tales. This is the place where the biggest memories are made, with high emotion, mass sing-a-longs, and almost transcendental fan experiences. Expect a bit of Beyoncé and a touch of the Manic Street Preachers, before discovering why the Beastie Boys were made for the T In The Park - and of course, how Eminem makes sure his trainers stay clean.
